What can I do with a Master's in Chemical Education?

Judie Kise: The project that I'm doing is a two year project only for my Master's. After I'm done, I'm free to pursue other research groups to start a new project. If I find a research group willing to take me, then I can do my PHD in chemistry. Sorry for the confusion on that part of the question.

Carlton Lastrapes: In the UK to be able to teach at tertiary (University) level, you will have to have a PhD, together with further research work and published research papers in your chosen field of chemistry. In the UK a PhD is three years of full time research. If you have a suitable project to research you supervisor will almost certainly want all or part of your research published. You gain your PhD and continue in further 'post-doctorate' research. During this time you will be offered work(income) to lecture first year undergraduates under the supervision of your supervisor. The whole can take 5 or 6 years to complete, at which point a university or college should ! be able to offer you a post of lecturer. More research and lecturing and you go up the scale to Professor, Dean or head of Department, even Vice Chancellor. I would suggest that if the PhD project that you are doing is not to your liking then find another one and transfer. Masters in Chem Ed are usually in teaching in college(tertiary) or schools(secondary) education. However, have a look ant the Royal Society of Chemistry's web- site or the American Chemical Scoiety's web site. Both these major chemical learned societies should be able to give you some guidance, through either the membership or education departments. Hope that helps and good luck!!!!...Show more
