Check out the website of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing - you will get a wealth of information, including which colleges and universities have credentialing programs. Since you are interested in the severely handicapped (and that's the way it is spelled, not "handy capt"), the credential you will be considering is the Moderate/ Severe Credential. The junior college system in Calif! ornia is an EXCELLENT way to start your college career. It is! relatively inexpensive per unit, and you save a lot of money if you can live at home for your first 2 years of college. You can take many of your "general educations" requirements at the junior college. Just be sure that you tell your advisor at the JC that you intend to transfer to a 4-year university and to pursue a teaching credential in special education, so they can help you to select courses that will transfer to the university.
