Why is Los Angeles so car dependent?

Cherry Stampka: Because of the great weather millions of people moved to LA. I lived there for 10 years myself. And they built horizontally with low density and not vertically like in New York because at the time land was cheap.Public transportation only works effectively when you have high density so LA became car dependent. A 20 mile (each way) commute is considered a short commute there. I had one. I had a choice of a 45 minute car trip each way or 3 hours each way on the bus....Show more

Luke Creitz: Big cities have more cars. Some very very big cities have even huge amount of cars. Is it that simple and there isn't history about it :).

Letitia Bigelow: Because Los Angeles covers 465 square miles with 3.8 million people. Can't get any where without a car.
