Why do cribs have rails?

Sherita Gallati: So you can see the baby without having to look down into the crib from above.

Stephnie Patout: maybe you should bring the idea to crib makers and they can test it out on you first.

Marylee Lucks: Babies are not ment to be kept in cages!

Fannie Collingwood: If you did that then you couldn't see the baby while he/she is sleeping. There are a few reasons you want to see the baby while sleeping. One for safety. Especially with SIDS as common as it is today. But also because for new parents its the greatest joy to look at your baby while sleeping.

Dallas Bartolini: Part is what others said, babies want to see around. But more important is that you can easily see the babby from any part of the room incase its choking, throwing up etc.

Rosalva Steinmann: rails to keep baby from falling out, not walled or he will feel cut off totally, thats horid, you may as well put him in a box.

Marion Wieboldt: how about i give you a cardbo! ard box and let you sleep in that for about a year and a half??? not being able to see what is going on around you. it would suck wouldn't it? and this question had nothing to do with UNWED mothers. that was a complete stereotype.

Carlton Lastrapes: so you can see your baby inside the crib if ithappens to be next to your bed that and it looks beter

Dick Baumgarten: so the baby can't roll out of the crib and get hurt!! DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pam Rampadarat: so the babies can see out and not feel like they are shoved into a box

Keven Drumgole: wouldn't you rather be able to see out?? i sure would. babies would probably not enjoy being stuck in a box. and what's the worry about rails? as long as they are spaced properly, they are not a danger.

Will Camus: There railed so that the parents can see into the crib. It's fashioned after jail bars because most babies are born to unwed mothers, so they're getting the baby used to where it's going to! end up some day.

Lana Uliano: That is stupid question i! ts like putting your child in a box. you think about that and then answer your own question...

Dedra Furguson: the reason is the mother's cant go on peeping the baby if it is sleeping, so she can she her loved one through the rails, - whether it has got up or still sleeping ..and secondly even the babies have to see out, if it sees that someone is around him they might not be scared and will play for more time...

Cyndy Grimes: to a baby any thing can be facinating, wouldnt you thing they would want to look at things in the room insted of a friggn wall?the mother of the child can just look in the room and check and see the baby is okay and doesnt have something over his/her face. insted of having to go and stand over it. its easier for the baby to get more air circulating around them.......Show more

Troy Monsivais: uhh............ smart question.maybe the baby would like to see what's going on outside the crib, instead of it staring at a WALL the whole fric! kin time.

Rona Ising: The rails are so that if baby should scoot close the them baby can still breath. Also they keep the air circulating over baby.

Houston Venezia: to prevent the baby from falling duh

Tomi Vauters: how would you feel if you had to sleep in a box and couldnt see anything except the ceiling? babies need to look around, thats how they learn to recognize shapes and colors, and if they cant see their mother, they wont learn to recognize faces eitther.

Russel Gajate: So that the parents can see in without having to look directly down at the baby, and also, so the baby can see out. Looking up gets boring!

Stan Conley: Ok for one thing have u ever heard of SIDS...Sudden Infant Death Syndrom...babys need oxygen and having walls would prevent good circulation of the oxygen...u r not even supposed to put the bumpers up until the baby is rolling...also babies need to see what around them when they r awake in the crib, get to know there! surroundings so they r comfortable when they wake up, they have things! they can see and recognize around them...it is also claming to be able to see mommy or daddy walk into the room to get them...they can get all excited when they see u....Show more

Bob Pucella: So babies can see outside the crib, and you can see inside the crib...so babies can toss toys out between the rails, and you can slide toys in between the rails.... So big sister or brother can watch the baby grow, play with him etc. during nap times...So they have something to help pull themselves up into a standing possition...

Marco Stolarz: You didn't think this thing through very thoroughly, did you?
