An Trebil: Boat insurance is only required if the boat is financed. When and if the boat is paid for, there is no requirement for insurance- any losses would be on you.
Patrica Loertscher: No boat insurance is required by any law in California. However, if you want to keep your boat in a marina they will usually require liability coverage.
